It’s Throwback Thursday on February 1, 2024 and for today’s message we are going back to 1989 once more.
In his book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Steven R. Covey, Phd., wrote that Highly Effective People are proactive. This is habit #1. On Friday of last week I shared habit #2 which is to begin with the end in mind.
Today I am sharing habit #3 which is Put First Things First.
In the book, Dr. Covey gives an example of a large glass jar and he successively fills it with big rocks, pebbles, sand, and finally water. Here’s a link to a video that was recorded in the late 1980s or early 1990s where Dr. Covey demonstrates the exercise in a workshop.
Now, how does this relate to us today?
Well, we have to ask ourselves, are we putting first things first? Are we putting the big rocks in first or are we working the small stuff because it is easier and it keeps us busy?
Ask yourself: “Am I putting the big rocks in first?”
Big rocks can come in many forms.
For me, the biggest rock is faith. Then it’s family, fitness (which I need to work on more), finances, and then friends.
What about you? What are your big rocks? What do you need to put in your container of time each day? Is it self development?
Developing your Sphere of Influence?
Lead Generation?
Hand written cards, FORD calls?
Ask yourself: Am I putting the big rocks first in my daily schedule?
The honest answer to this question will help you in both your personal and professional life just like it will help me.
So today, I challenge you today to look at your daily activities and find the big rocks you need to prioritize and put those in first.
If I can be of assistance to you in doing this, just reach out to me and I’ll be happy to assist you.
